Aka Tombo Coffee is a handcrafted café created by Chris from Melbourne, Australia, who personally designed and built the space-including the signature plaster counter. The café centers around Melbourne-style espresso drinks, bringing the city’s vibrant coffee culture to Nara. Chris loves to share his passion for the city and occasionally hosts unique night tours. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, drawing both locals and travelers looking for genuine conversation and a great cup of coffee.

 

MENU

The morning set is a highlight-freshly brewed espresso drinks paired with a light breakfast. Lattes and cappuccinos are especially recommended, crafted with Melbourne’s signature attention to detail. The hot sandwich is another local favorite. The menu is designed to satisfy both coffee aficionados and casual guests.

A slice of modern Melbourne in old-school Nara
DESCRIPTION:

ANY B&B+COFFEE is a specialty coffee shop and one-group-per-day boutique inn. Their goal is to provide a blank canvas for stories and memories to unfold through their lodging and specialist coffee. The café provides a calm space to enjoy coffee and breakfast. Coffee beans are available for purchase in-store and online, with shipping both within Japan and internationally.

 

MENU DETAILS:

The morning menu features a selection of light and satisfying options: homemade granola, toasted sandwiches with gluten-free and vegan choices available. The homemade granola is baked with a range of organic oats, walnuts, pumpkin seeds topped with seasonal fruit and served with milk. It's gluten-free, and can be made vegan by substituting milk with soy or oat milk.

OHANASAN-NO-MUSUBI

The art of Japanese onigiri rice balls
DESCRIPTION:

Ohana-no-Musubi is a breakfast-only spot, dedicated to the art of Japanese rice balls and a simple, nourishing meal. The rice, a premium Koshihikari variety sourced directly from a local Nara farmer, is gently shaped into fluffy, tender omusubi. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with a single counter perfect for solo diners or couples. The owner can't speak English so you’ll need to use a translation app, but she's very friendly and eager to provide you with a healthy start to your day made up of the honest flavors of quality ingredients. 

 

MENU DETAILS:
The morning set features two omusubi of your choice (salted rice, ume, mentaiko, homemade salmon, kombu, or okaka), miso soup, a small grilled fish, and assorted pickles. Each rice ball is made to order. Takeout options are available. Add-ons like extra rice balls or miso soup are also available. At the front of the shop is a quaint members-only bookstore that you are also free to peruse.​​

Tucked away down two bends from the main street, Chaporo is a charming, self-renovated traditional homw-now turned café in Naramachi. Inside you’ll find cozy rooms with a mix of sofas and eclectic tables, exposed beams, and handmade touches throughout. The atmosphere is relaxed and a little quirky, with a homey feel that makes you want to linger. Guests remove their shoes at the entrance, adding to the authentic Japanese experience.

 

MENU DETAILS:

Chaporo offers a simple yet satisfying menu, with highlights including: Morning Set (8:30–11:30): toast, shredded cabbage salad, fried egg, with a drink, curry rice, seasonal desserts, home made chocolate parfait. The café also sells small goods and crafts. The café is also known for its friendly owner, who loves to chat with visitors
